Swissair (Swiss Air Transport Company
Limited) was the former national airline of Switzerland. It was
formed of a merger between Balair and Ad Astra Aero (To the Stars), in
1931. For most of its 71 years, Swissair was one of the major
international airlines and known as the "Flying Bank" due to the
financial stability of the airline, causing it be regarded as a Swiss
national symbol and icon.
Nearly 30 percent of Swissair stock was owned by the Swiss government,
and at the demise of the airline, Swissair belonged to the holding
company SAirGroup, the regional airline Crossair, and the charter
company Balair. Its major hubs until the early 1990s were at Zürich
International Airport and Geneva Cointrin International Airport. Its
successor, Swiss International Air Lines, is using the old Crossair
sign LX and the ICAO code SWR.
Malaysia Airlines (Malay:Syarikat Penerbangan Malaysia; MYX: 3786)
is the flag carrier of Malaysia. Malaysia Airlines operates
flights from its home base, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and
its secondary hub in Kota Kinabalu. Despite a financial restructuring
exercise in 2006, Malaysia Airlines maintains a strong presence in
Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Middle East and on the Kangaroo
Route between Europe and Australasia.
Malaysia Airlines also operates
transatlantic flights from Kuala Lumpur to Newark, via Stockholm, and
transpacific flights from Kuala Lumpur to Los Angeles, via Taipei.
In 1997, the airline flew the world's
longest non-commercial, non-stop flight from Boeing Field in Seattle
to Kuala Lumpur, flying eastward passing the European and African
continents and breaking the Great Circle Distance Without Landing
record for an airliner on a Boeing 777-200ER: longer than the record
held by the Boeing 777-200LR.
Malaysia Airlines
non-aeronautical revenue sources include maintenance, repair and
overhaul (MRO)[3] and aircraft handling. Malaysia Airlines has two
airline subsidiaries: Firefly and MASWings. Firefly operates scheduled
flights from its home base Penang International Airport which focus on
tertiary cities, while MASWings focuses on inter-Borneo flights.
Malaysia Airlines has a freighter fleet operated by MASKargo, which
manages freighter flights and aircraft cargo-hold capacity for all
Malaysia Airlines' passenger flights.
The most important bit of advice is this: Do not give up. Keep digging
for those deals. Maintain the positive attitude that you can find the
lowest airfare prices out there somewhere.
Differences in air fares can be
substantial. Careful comparison shopping among airlines
does take time, but it can lead to real savings in your airline
ticket.
